What’s on in Oxfordshire over the Summer Holidays

With 6 weeks of school holidays to fill we thought we would help with a guide to what’s going on in Oxfordshire over the summer holidays.

PETER RABBIT – MISCHIEF AND MAYHEM at The Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock

JUNE 16  – SEPTEMBER 8

Bunnies will be bouncing all over the Museum this summer, as Peter Rabbit hops, skips and jumps right off the page in this interactive exhibition about Beatrix Potter’s most famous  creation.

The Brew House gallery will transform into a playroom where visitors can have fun helping Mrs Tiggywinkle hang up the laundry or visit Mrs Rabbit in her burrow!

Children can dress up as Peter, help plant carrots in Mr McGregor’s garden or curl up with one of the books in the story corner.

PIRATES, PANTS AND WELLYPHANTS AT THE RIVER & ROWING MUSEUM, Henley

JUNE 22  – SEPTEMBER 16 

Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants

Nick Sharratt, the man behind the instantly recognisable illustrations for Jacqueline Wilson’s Tracy Beaker books, is the subject of this colourful, humorous and hands-on exhibition.

This fun packed exhibition explores Nick’s passion for drawing, from childhood to his current status as an internationally renowned illustrator and author.

INDOOR BEACH AT OXFORD GARDEN & SHOPPING VILLAGE

JULY 16 – SEPTEMBER 2

Indoor beach

Oxford Garden & Shopping Centre have a free indoor beach this summer with free activities throughout the summer and you can sit back in the seating area and enjoy a milkshake or a cup of tea.

Free activities throughout the summer include:

  • Face Painting on Tuesday 24th July, Tuesday 31st July & Thursday 9th August 2018 (11am – 3pm)
  • Punch & Judy Show and Balloon Modelling on Thursday 26th July, Thursday 2nd August & Thursday 16th August (shows on the hour 11am – 3pm)
  • Dizzy Deans Magic Show on Tuesday 7th August & Tuesday 21st August & Thursday 30th August (shows on the hour 11am – 3pm)

SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS IN OXFORD’S UNIVERSITY PARKS

This summer, Creation Theater will be venturing to University Parks in Oxford for their summer production of Swallows and Amazons.

SUMMER FUN TRAILS AT WATERPERRY GARDENS

JULY 14 – SEPTEMBER 2

Waterperry gardens

Orienteering family fun during the summer holidays from 14th July through to the 2nd September. Enjoy exploring the ornamental gardens, using directions and clues, to find the characters!

Complete your adventure and collect your prize! £3 per child (compass supplied), tickets available from the Gift Barn and Garden Shop. Children must be accompanied by an adult for whom the standard garden entrance fee applies.

Millets Maize Maze is back again this year and it’s definitely worth a visit, plus there’s so much more at Millets to see too.

The theme this year is the Wild WIld West and it will be open from 18 July – 3 September with lots of activities to explore

STORY TELLING AT GREYS COURT

JULY 20  – SEPTEMBER 4

Story telling at Greys court

Everyday in the summer holidays, Greys Court will be telling the stories that Lady Brunner loved as a child in the secret garden at Greys Court.

Rediscover the childhood classics adored by Lady Brunner this summer, as you join our storytellers in the secret garden, an area not normally open to the public.

Sessions run at 1pm and 2.30pm every day of the summer holidays, subject to availability.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

JULY 27

Alice in Wonderland at Watrperry

Take a trip down the rabbit hole with Chapterhouse Theatre Company this summer in the wonderful setting of the Waterperry outdoor Ampitheatre, as they present the classic tale of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Join Alice as she stumbles into the magical world of Wonderland and meet a whole host of colourful characters. From the unforgettable White Rabbit and the madcap Mad Hatter to the terrifying Queen of Hearts, Alice’s journey couldn’t be filled with more adventure. Presented in beautiful Victorian costume and alive with song, dance and original music, this is a production to delight the entire family.

Riverside Festival in Chalbury

Riverside Festival

Going from strength to strength, and much loved by all, Riverside has become a major fixture in Oxfordshire’s music calendar, with more than 30 acts playing across three stages. Despite the cost of putting on an event of this size, it is still entirely free to enter, and that is down to the astonishing community effort that goes into staging the festival.

Countryfile Live at Blenheim Palace

This huge and exciting event combines the tradition of the UK’s best county fairs with the quality editorial and presentation of one of the BBC’s flagship programmes.

Enjoy exciting live arena shows, talks, hands-on activities, Adam Henson’s farm, animal displays, farming in action, Q&A with the Countryfile presenters, off road experiences, shopping from more than 700 exhibitors including food, craft and luxury producers and even a great British pub garden.

The summer gardens at Cliveden are in full bloom and waiting to be discovered by little legs. Head along for Cliveden’s fun summer adventure trail where children will explore nature and create their own gift to take home.

The trail will change every fortnight over the 6 weeks summer holiday, with all 3 trails under the ‘Summer of Colour’ theme.

SPY SCHOOL AT OXFORDSHIRE MUSEUM

AUGUST 8

Bring your mini-sleuths to the Oxfordshire Museum to help reveal mysterious invisible messages, decrypt codes and figure out the pattern behind puzzles. Some unusual and interesting documents have been found in the museum, but what do they say? The trainee spies will perform their own feat of deception to hoodwink the culprits. Will your Alex Rider, Miss Marple or 007 accept the mission?

RUMSEY’S CHOCOLATE BAR MAKING WORKSHOP

AUGUST 8 & 20

Rumsey's

Children will get to invent their own chocolate bars, creating them with the help of their chocolatiers. While the bars are setting children will design and draw their own bar wrappers.

It’s £20 per child which includes 2 bars of chocolate, a milkshake or a hot chocolate.

TOWERSEY FRINGE

Fringe

In 2015 a group of enthusiastic Towersey villagers decided to hold a fundraising event on the August Bank holiday weekend at Towersey Playing Fields. They settled on the idea of a comedy evening featuring some of the finest comedians on the circuit, with bands and beer during the afternoon, to compliment the music festival hosted in nearby Thame. This was how the “Towersey Fringe” was born.

There are bands during the day who provide their time for free and Comedy Acts in the evening where tickets can be purchased for £25 per ticket.

In addition to the beer, bubbly and bands for the grown ups they have some great things lined up to amuse the kids too. From 12.00 pm on Sunday 26th August 2018, including the wonderful children’s play area, there will be face painting, Zorbing and the Candy Floss Crew will be there with their inflatable maze, candy floss stall and a win a toy stall and new for this year we have not one but two bouncy castles  – hours of fun!

This is a free event but tickets can be bought for the Comedy Acts in the evening.
