Karate and Martial Arts

Little Ankle Biters have put together a list of places that offer karate and martial arts classes and lessons for children in Oxfordshire.

A1 Martial Arts has a unique programme that combines ancient martial arts with modern life coaching. Their mission is to equip kids with the mental tools to reach their potential in whatever field they choose. They teach that there is no such word as ‘can’t’; that there are no problems or barriers blocking our way, only challenges which can be embraced and conquered. Training in control leads to better decision-making – whether it be handling a pet, SATS or a bully with just the right amount of thought, energy and responsibility. Book your free introductory classes and experience a different approach to education.

Aikido is a defensive art. A student in Aikido is taught how to neutralise an attack in way that, uniquely, maintains the safety of both the attacker and defender. Further, there is no sparring or competition element to the training. Students are not taught to fight each other and as such so there is no negative winner/loser mentality in them. Instead students learn to work together to develop their techniques and, through this co-operation, all of them can build positively reinforced self-confidence.

Classes are split into three different age groups: Little Dragons age 4 to 7, Juniors age 8 to 11, and Cadets age 10 to 16 with more emphasis on learning Aikido techniques from the adult syllabus introduced at the Junior and Cadet level.

It is widely acknowledged that learning a martial art is the learning of self defence. At Custom Karate a more holistic approach to self defence is taught from the actual act of being able to defend oneself from hostile physical attack through to protecting yourself through correct diet and lifestyle choices. Naturally the teaching of karate instructs the student to be competent in self defence and in turn embodies a sense of self confidence.

As a side point; attackers are almost always stronger than their intended victims, at Custom Karate emphasis is given to techniques that exploits an opponent’s strength advantage to ensure that a Custom Karate Student never becomes a victim.
