Annie the Musical Review

Annie the Musical Review

We were lucky enough to be invited along to see the opening of Annie at The New Theatre Oxford last night and  we cannot recommend it highly enough.

Annie tells the story of an 11 year old orphan living in New York through the 1930’s Great Depression and is ecstatic when she is chosen to spend 2 weeks with famous billionaire Oliver Warbucks, and escaping Christmas at the orphanage and the malicious drunk, Miss Hannigan.

After spending time with the delightful Annie, Mr Warbucks decides to adopt her. Annie, however wants nothing more than to find her real parents who left her at the orphanage as a baby with the promise to return one day. Oliver Warbucks helps Annie in her quest by offering a financial reward.

Greedy couples line up in their hundreds claiming to be the missing parents of Annie including Rooster and Lily, Miss Hannigan’s evil brother and his girlfriend who plot to take Annie and the money..

Annie played by Taziva-Faye Katsande and her supporting team of girls were absolutely superb.  The singing, comedic timing and choreography were fantastic and the performance of “Hard Knock Life” was so full of energy and a sensational start to the show.

Anita Dobson, best known for playing Angie Watts in Eastenders was absolutely incredible as the drunken Miss Hannigan. Her portrayal was hilariously funny, dynamic and thoroughly entertaining. The rest of the cast including Alex Bourne as Oliver Warbucks and Carolyn Maitland as Grace Farrell were equally as good with strong performances and excellent vocals.

The star of the show, where the entire audience could be heard involuntary uttering “Ahhh” when appearing on stage was Sandy, a real life dog played by Amber the Labradoodle.

We absolutely loved Annie the Musical and we would definitely recommend it as a must see family show this year!!

The show is on at The New Theatre in Oxford until Saturday 9 March and then continues to tour the UK .
